Coyote

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are present throughout Michigan, including both rural and urban areas. They are highly adaptable and have successfully established themselves in a diverse range of habitats, from forests to suburban neighborhoods. Originally from the Southwest, coyotes have moved east because of the depletion of North America’s wolf populations. Coyotes primarily hunt small mammals, such as rabbits and rodents, but they are also opportunistic scavengers, consuming fruits, insects, and even human food scraps. Despite their widespread presence, conflicts between coyotes and humans are relatively rare, and they play a valuable role in controlling rodent populations and maintaining ecological balance in the state.

Living with Coyotes.

To peacefully coexist with coyotes, consider the following guidelines:

1. Remove attractants: Ensure that trash cans are securely closed, and avoid leaving pet food or water outside, as these can lure coyotes into residential areas.

2. Supervise pets: Keep small pets indoors or closely supervised when outside, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active.

3. Secure fencing: Install sturdy fencing that extends into the ground to discourage coyotes from entering your property.

4. Hazing techniques: If you encounter a coyote in your vicinity, use loud noises, waving arms, or throwing objects to frighten them away and reinforce their natural fear of humans.

By following these practices, you can help promote peaceful cohabitation and reduce potential conflicts with coyotes while appreciating the vital role they play in the ecosystem.
