Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist (Contract)

Contract Period: May 5th to October 1st, 2025

Sleeping Bear Wildlife Fund (SBWF) is dedicated to rehabilitating and restoring Northern Michigan’s wildlife while fostering meaningful connections between people and nature. This seasonal contract position focuses on the care and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife, with an emphasis on ensuring their successful release back into the wild. The role will also include assisting with habitat restoration projects, supporting wildlife conservation research, and public education efforts to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities include wildlife care, facility maintenance, public engagement, wildlife restoration, volunteer management, rescue and transport support, documentation and reporting, and team collaboration. Responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

  • Assist with medical assessments, diagnostic procedures, and treatments for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.

  • Provide comprehensive care, including feeding, administering treatments, and monitoring animal health and behavior.

  • Prepare specialized diets and habitats based on species’ natural history, growth stages, and individual needs.

  • Maintain a high standard of hygiene and organization in rehabilitation enclosures, medical areas, and other facilities, ensuring safe and appropriate environments for wildlife.

  • Communicate with the public regarding wildlife emergencies and patient care. Represent SBWF in a professional and educational manner.

  • Educate the community on human-wildlife interactions and best practices for coexistence.

  • Run educational outreach booths to engage with the public about the mission of SBWF.

  • Hike to trail camera locations to swap batteries and SD cards, ensuring continuous data collection for monitoring wildlife abundance.

  • Provide guidance to volunteers and interns, ensuring they adhere to proper animal care protocols and safety procedures. 

  • Assist in wildlife rescue operations, assuring safe capture, handling, and transport of animals, including coordinating pickup and delivery of patients.

  • Maintain accurate records for wildlife patients, documenting progress, medical treatments, and rehabilitation outcomes.

  • Assist with the management of the SBWF phone line to response to inquiries and provide guidance on appropriate actions.

  • Participate in team meetings to discuss ongoing cases, resolve issues, and improve the quality of care.

  • Promote a positive, respectful, and inclusive team atmosphere.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required for wildlife rescue and transport. Successful candidates must submit proof of a current tetanus vaccination before their start date. Must be authorized to work in the United States. Must adhere to SBWF's health and safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and reporting of safety concerns.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A demonstrated interest in wildlife biology, veterinary care, or a related field.

  • Experience working in wildlife rehabilitation or animal care, particularly with native species.

  • The ability to handle a physically and emotionally demanding workload, including the handling of injured or sick animals.

  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed for wildlife emergencies.

  • Familiarity with Michigan’s native wildlife species and conservation challenges.
